Asfa Shahbaz’s Rise in Tennis: From Sharakpur to Saudi Arabia’s Courts

Lahore: Asfa Shahbaz, a determined tennis player from Lahore, has emerged as a prominent figure in the sport, overcoming substantial challenges to excel on both the national and international stages. Her story is a testament to the power of perseverance and dedication in the pursuit of sporting excellence.

According to The University of Lahore, Shahbaz shared her journey and experiences during an interview with the Press and Publications Cell (PPC) at the university, where she is currently enrolled in an MPhil program for Sports Sciences and Physical Education. Her narrative includes a transition from a modest beginning in Sharakpur to becoming a national tennis player and competing internationally.

Shahbaz’s tennis career began during a childhood visit to her grandmother in Sheikhupura, where a local coach recognized her potential. This encounter set her on a path to pursue tennis professionally in Lahore. Alongside her academic pursuits at the University of Punjab and later at The University of Lahore, she has achieved notable successes in the sport.

Her recent accomplishments include competing in the Saudi games on a wildcard entry, reaching the semi-finals, and securing three gold medals at the open national tennis championships in Pakistan. Shahbaz has also made significant strides on the international circuit, notably at events organized by the Saudi Padel Federation and the Saudi Tennis Federation, where she has consistently placed among the top competitors.

Looking ahead, Shahbaz is inspired by Swiss tennis legend Roger Federer and aspires to become Pakistan’s first female Grand Slam champion. She aims to refine her technique further and achieve new heights in her tennis career.

Shahbaz also addressed the challenges she faced, particularly the financial hurdles associated with pursuing a sport as costly as tennis. She remains committed to her path and hopes to inspire young athletes, especially girls, to pursue their dreams regardless of the obstacles.

“Everybody has to face struggle; great dreams demand great efforts and even greater sacrifices. Do not let your age or your gender hold you back from achieving your goals. Surround yourself with positive people who can motivate you and help you become the best version of yourself,” Shahbaz advised, encapsulating her philosophy towards achieving sporting success.
