Abhishek Sharma Propels India to Series Victory Over New Zealand

Guwahati: Abhishek Sharma was the standout performer as India clinched a decisive eight-wicket victory against New Zealand in the third T20I on Sunday. The win secured an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series for the hosts.

According to International Cricket Council, Sharma's explosive innings of 68 not out from just 20 balls included a rapid half-century reached in a mere 14 deliveries. This achievement marks the second-fastest fifty by an Indian in T20I cricket, trailing only Yuvraj Singh, who was an early mentor to Sharma.

India's chase of New Zealand's 153-run target was completed in just 10 overs, marking the second-fastest chase of a 150+ score in T20I history. This effort was bolstered by captain Suryakumar Yadav's 57 off 26 balls, marking his second consecutive half-century as he finds form ahead of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026.

India, unbeaten in T20I series since their 2024 World Cup triumph in Barbados, are preparing to defend their title in the upcoming World Cup. The hosts received another boost from Jasprit Bumrah, who claimed three wickets and played a vital role in restricting New Zealand to 153/9.

As co-hosts of the 2026 World Cup, India are grouped with Pakistan, USA, Namibia, and Netherlands. They will open their campaign against the USA in Mumbai on February 7.
