RAWALPINDI: Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital Rawalpindi hosted the Fellowship of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth), United Kingdom, examinations for the third consecutive time, marking a significant milestone in international ophthalmic education and professional training at the institution.

According to Al-Shifa Trust, the event drew 71 candidates and featured the participation of five local examiners alongside 15 international examiners. Candidates from various countries took part in the exams, reflecting the hospital's expanding role in international ophthalmology. Maj. Gen. (Retd) Rehmat Khan, President of Al-Shifa Trust, stated that the Royal College's decision to hold the exams at the hospital for the third year in a row underscores confidence in the institution's facilities and academic environment.

The collaboration provides Pakistani ophthalmologists with the opportunity to engage with international experts and gain exposure to global standards of professional assessment. It also allows them to pursue fellowship examinations locally, thereby reducing the travel expenses and logistical challenges typically associated with taking these exams abroad. The partnership with the Royal College began in 2024, providing a local avenue for obtaining the recognized fellowship qualification.

Notable among the visiting examiners were Ms. Sophie Donovan, Acting Director of Examinations at the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, and UK-based examiners Osama Giasin and Muhammad Mohyudin. Khan emphasized that hosting these examinations is an honor for Pakistan, showcasing confidence in the country's medical institutions. He affirmed Al-Shifa's commitment to promoting international medical education and professional development through such collaborations.

Enhanced specialist training is expected to improve the diagnosis and management of complex eye conditions, benefiting patients by developing local expertise and reducing reliance on treatment abroad. Al-Shifa Trust aims to continue its collaboration with the Royal College and other international academic institutions to further professional training, encourage knowledge exchange, and strengthen eye care services in Pakistan.
