Family Donates Corneas of Deceased Dialysis Patient to Restore Sight for Two Individuals

Karachi: The family of Abdul Samad, a 21-year-old dialysis patient at the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT), has donated his corneas, enabling two visually impaired individuals to regain their sight.

According to Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation, Samad, a resident of Purana Golimar, had been undergoing dialysis at SIUT since April of the previous year due to kidney failure caused by a genetically inherited ailment. Medical constraints prevented him from undergoing a kidney transplant. His elder brother, also a dialysis patient at SIUT since 2016, accompanied him during treatment sessions, where nephrologists noted their mutual support.

The family has a history of organ donation, highlighted by a kidney transplant for Samad's maternal uncle in 1986, facilitated by his mother, Pervin, who donated her kidney and works at SIUT as a technologist. Motivated by personal experiences with medical challenges and organ donation, the family chose to donate Samad's corneas, granting two others the chance to improve their vision.

SIUT has praised the family's decision and emphasized the importance of raising awareness about deceased organ donation.
