Islamabad: In a message commemorating World Press Freedom Day, President Asif Ali Zardari emphasized the critical role of a free press in shaping a peaceful future, highlighting the increasing challenges faced by journalists worldwide. He noted that misinformation and disinformation are significant threats to democratic discourse, compounded by the rise of artificial intelligence and its potential misuse.

According to Pakistan Peoples Party, President Zardari expressed concern over the influence of powerful global media, particularly social media platforms, which he accused of promoting harmful agendas through algorithmic interventions. He stated that tech giants often view national states with disdain, posing a threat to the free press alongside non-state actors and big businesses.

The President reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment to press freedom as enshrined in the country's constitution, noting that a free, independent, and diverse media is a testament to a confident nation. He stressed the importance of accountability, transparency, and open inquiry as foundations of a healthy democracy, urging media institutions to uphold ethical standards and citizens to support credible journalism.

President Zardari also called for protective measures for journalists, especially those working in conflict zones, and emphasized the need for a responsible information ecosystem. He underscored the importance of accuracy and balance in reporting to maintain public trust, which he described as the most valuable asset of a free press.
