UET Lahore Explores Fasting’s Impact on Social Conduct in Lecture

Lahore: University of Engineering and Technology Lahore hosted an academic lecture titled “The Philosophy of Fasting and Our Social Attitudes,” aiming to explore the deeper significance of fasting beyond its religious rituals. The event, organized under the auspices of the Al-Khwarizmi Institute, featured Dr. Tanveer Qasim, an Associate Professor in the Department of Islamic Studies, as the keynote speaker.

According to University of Engineering and Technology, Dr. Tanveer Qasim emphasized that fasting is a system designed to instill taqwa, or God-consciousness, in individuals, which transcends outward religious practices. He articulated that true taqwa involves living with an awareness of lawful and unlawful actions in all life aspects. Highlighting the importance of social behavior, Dr. Qasim questioned the efficacy of fasting if virtues such as honesty, integrity, and justice are not evident in daily interactions post-Ramadan. He argued that religious symbols in public spaces are inadequate without practical integrity and ethical responsibility.

Dr. Qasim further elaborated that fasting should foster self-accountability, self-discipline, and responsibility before God. If these qualities do not manifest in collective behavior, the essence of fasting remains unmet. He underscored that Ramadan should serve as a catalyst for moral reform and societal improvement rather than mere ritual observance.

Participants in the session described it as significant for social reform. Administrative officials of the Al-Khwarizmi Institute, including Mr. Aqeel Babar, Mr. Kashif Bashir, and Mr. Muzammil Mahmood, were in attendance and presented an honorary shield to Dr. Qasim in recognition of his insights.
