President Zardari Highlights Global Nuclear Risks on Chernobyl Anniversary

Islamabad: In a message commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster, President Asif Ali Zardari emphasized the enduring impact of the 1986 nuclear accident on global nuclear safety and the importance of international cooperation in mitigating nuclear risks. The explosion at the Chernobyl plant released radiation that affected millions across Belarus, Ukraine, and the Russian Federation, with consequences persisting long after the incident.

According to Pakistan Peoples Party, President Zardari's message on International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day underscored the need to recognize the far-reaching effects of radiation exposure, which transcends geographic boundaries and generations, impacting public health, the environment, and economic life. He highlighted the critical role of the United Nations and partner organizations in supporting affected communities through health interventions and recovery programs, eventually focusing on rehabilitation and development.

The president stressed that nuclear safety requires more than technical measures; it demands consistent discipline, strong oversight, and a comprehensive understanding of the risks. He warned that negligence or hostile actions involving nuclear installations could have severe consequences beyond the immediate target, affecting populations with no direct connection to the originating event.

President Zardari outlined the practical disruptions faced by ordinary citizens due to nuclear incidents, such as the contamination of agricultural land, affected food and water supplies, displacement of families, and long-term health conditions. He reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment to upholding the highest standards of nuclear safety and security and supporting international efforts to promote responsible conduct and reduce the risk of disasters.
