Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari underscored the importance of enhancing connectivity and trade between Pakistan and Uzbekistan during a meeting with Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev at Aiwan-e-Sadr. The meeting focused on elevating bilateral relations through cooperation in various sectors, including defense, culture, and regional connectivity.
According to Pakistan Peoples Party, President Zardari emphasized the shared history and cultural ties between the two nations, noting the positive trajectory of their relationship. He highlighted initiatives like the Uzbekistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan Railway Project and stressed the goal of expanding trade to USD 2 billion. President Mirziyoyev, in turn, reaffirmed Uzbekistan's commitment to strengthening its strategic partnership with Pakistan, citing the growth in bilateral contacts and inviting President Zardari to visit Uzbekistan.
The discussions also covered regional peace and security, with both leaders agreeing on the need for political dialogue and economic cooperation. The meeting included delegation-level talks attended by key ministers from both countries, and concluded with a special investiture ceremony where President Mirziyoyev was awarded the Nishan-e-Pakistan for his role in fostering bilateral relations.
