Akmal Shehzad Aspires to Transform Health Care in Punjab

Gujrat: Akmal Shehzad, a recent graduate from a small town in Gujrat, has set his sights on revolutionizing the health care system in Punjab. His mission, shaped by personal experiences with inadequate local health services, includes establishing a trauma care center in central Punjab. Akmal’s aspirations took root at Aga Khan University (AKU) in Pakistan, where he received a merit-based scholarship and honed his skills in neuroscience and translational research.

According to Aga Khan University, Akmal’s journey exemplifies the institution’s commitment to nurturing students who aspire to create social impact. At AKU, he discovered a passion for bridging the gap between scientific discovery and practical application, benefiting from mentorship that refined his goals. Outside the classroom, Akmal has actively engaged in community service, taking leadership roles in various organizations to support education and climate conservation initiatives.

As head of the education department at Quadragon, Akmal successfully raised over PKR 1 million to support children’s education in need. His leadership extended to climate-focused projects, where he led efforts in ecosystem conservation and sustainability through the Society for Climate Conservation and Health. Additionally, his involvement in AKU’s Off the Beaten Track program facilitated medical and education camps in rural Sindh.

Akmal’s efforts have earned him recognition, including selection for the Global Young Scientists Summit 2025. He also played a pivotal role in developing an eco-friendly university transport initiative called Cycluni, securing seed funding through the AKU President’s Climate Challenge in 2022.

Looking ahead, Akmal plans to pursue further training before returning to serve his home region. His journey reflects AKU’s mission to empower students to make meaningful contributions to society, demonstrating the transformative power of education.
