Pakistan Strikes First in CWC 2025 Opener Against Bangladesh

Colombo: Pakistan made an early impact in their ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 opening match against Bangladesh, as Diana Baig secured a critical initial wicket. Baig successfully trapped Bangladesh’s Fargana Hoque, facilitating Pakistan’s defense of their modest total of 130 runs.

The match, held at R Premadasa International Cricket Stadium, saw Pakistan winning the toss and choosing to bat first. However, Bangladesh’s bowlers, led by Shorna Akter’s impressive figures of 3/5, restricted Pakistan to just 129 runs.

Marufa Akter’s early spell put Pakistan on the back foot, as her in-swinging deliveries dismissed Omaima Sohail and Sidra Amin. Nahida Akter further added to Pakistan’s woes, capturing two more wickets, including top-scorer Rameen Shamim.

Rabiya Khan continued Bangladesh’s bowling dominance by taking Sidra Nawaz’s wicket. Despite efforts from Pakistan’s captain Fatima Sana, who scored 22 runs, the side fell short, losing wickets consistently.

As Bangladesh began their chase, Baig’s breakthrough set the tone for a competitive second innings. This encounter marks the first game of the tournament, with both teams having earned their spots via the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 Qualifier tournament.

The match is a sequel to their last World Cup meeting in 2022, where Bangladesh claimed their maiden victory in the tournament against Pakistan.
