Singapore Honors Benazir Bhutto with Orchid Named in Her Memory

Islamabad: Singapore has paid tribute to former Prime Minister Shaheed Benazir Bhutto by featuring her in a new book that celebrates the city-state’s practice of naming orchid hybrids after notable world leaders. The book, which delves into the detailed process of orchid hybridization, highlights the ‘Dendrobium Benazir Bhutto,’ named during her visit to Singapore in 1995.

According to Pakistan Peoples Party, the book was authored by Koh Buck Song and launched by Singapore’s Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan. It showcases Singapore’s long-standing tradition of orchid diplomacy, initiated in 1956, where over 280 orchids have been named to honor foreign dignitaries as a symbol of friendship and goodwill. The ‘Dendrobium Benazir Bhutto’ orchid, characterized by its vibrant yellow color symbolizing warmth and happiness in Pakistani culture, commemorates Bhutto’s influence and contributions to global politics.

The publication provides a historical overview of Bhutto’s official visit to Singapore from March 7-9, 1995. During this trip, she engaged with the Singapore Chamber of Commerce, the Pakistani diaspora, and delivered a keynote address at the Fortune Global Forum. The book describes Bhutto as a global symbol of democracy and women’s empowerment, recalling her legacy as the first democratically elected female leader of a Muslim country and highlighting her significant impact on international relations.

Additionally, the book reflects on the condolences expressed by Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong following Bhutto’s assassination in 2007, underscoring her remembered courage and sacrifices.
