Karachi: In response to what he described as severe neglect in urban planning in Sindh, Altaf Shakoor, the chairman of the Pasban Democratic Party (PDP), has called for the establishment of a separate ministry for urban development in the province. This move, he suggests, would address issues of inequality and underdevelopment in major cities like Karachi.
According to Pasban Democratic Party, Shakoor underscored urban development as a pivotal element for economic growth and social equity. He argued that proper planning can significantly alleviate poverty and enhance the quality of life through better access to education, health services, and employment. The chairman pointed to the adverse effects of inadequate urban planning in Karachi, such as escalating crime rates, pollution, and social inequality, which he deemed alarming. He emphasized that the city’s resource distribution is more unequal compared to smaller cities, despite its large population.
Shakoor has appealed to Bilawal Bhutto, the chairman of the People’s Party, and Syed Murad Ali Shah, the Chief Minister of Sindh, to prioritize urban development by creating a dedicated ministry led by a capable minister, with the Chief Minister himself ideally overseeing its operations. He also called for adequate funding to support comprehensive urban development initiatives. The PDP Chairman further highlighted the constitutional rights of Karachi, advocating for it to receive the same considerations as other major global cities due to its significant population and economic potential.
