Karachi: Ahead of the expected monsoon rains, Pasban Democratic Party Vice Chairman Abdul Hakim Quaid emphasized the need for comprehensive preparations to mitigate potential disruptions and hazards in Karachi. These preparations include the cleaning of storm drains and covering open sewers to prevent accidents and ensure uninterrupted power during the rainy season. Quaid also advocated for the designation of Karachi as a chartered city to address its persistent infrastructural issues effectively.
According to Pasban Democratic Party, Abdul Hakim Quaid outlined a series of necessary actions to safeguard the residents of Karachi during the monsoon season. He stressed the importance of installing water extraction machines in areas prone to flooding and covering all open sewers to protect lives. Quaid criticized the current administrative measures by the Sindh government, which he claimed have left the city in disarray, akin to a “scene of Mohenjo Road.” He highlighted the repeated problems of overflowing sewage and unfinished infrastructure projects, which exacerbate during the rainy season.
The Vice Chairman also pointed to the inadequate response from the current administration, led by Murtaza Wahab, in managing the city’s monsoon challenges, including the dangers of electrocution that have previously resulted in fatalities. Quaid argued that granting Karachi the status of a chartered city with a dedicated and capable administrator would provide a robust framework to utilize local resources for solving these enduring problems. He asserted that such a change is essential for the city to manage its affairs independently and effectively, beyond the reach of provincial or federal oversight.
