West Indies Captain Hayley Matthews Targets Repeat of 2016 Triumph at T20 World Cup

Kingston: West Indies women’s cricket team captain Hayley Matthews has expressed confidence in her squad’s ability to emulate their 2016 success at the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. With a blend of seasoned and emerging talent, the team is gearing up to leverage their spin bowling strength in conditions similar to those they triumphed in eight years ago.

According to International Cricket Council, Matthews reminisced about her role as the Player of the Match in the 2016 final and the lasting impact that victory had on the team and the sport in the Caribbean. “The 2016 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup win gets brought up in the group from time to time, mainly because it feels like it was so long ago,” Matthews said. The captain highlighted the importance of spin in the upcoming tournament, noting that the team has strategically included several skilled spinners such as Karishma Ramharack, Stafanie Taylor, and Afy Fletcher.

Matthews also pointed out the psychological and performance advantages of the current squad, which has recently won three of four bilateral T20I series against Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and Ireland. The only series loss came against Australia, where the team managed to secure a historic win. With the World Cup on the horizon, Matthews is optimistic about the synergy and morale among her players, emphasizing the blend of experience and youth within her ranks.
