University Road Delays Highlight Governance Issues in Karachi, Says PDP Chairman

KARACHI: The ongoing delays in the completion of University Road have underscored significant governance failures in Karachi, according to Pasban Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman Altaf Shakoor. He expressed concerns over the prolonged disruptions that residents and commuters face due to the project intended to enhance public transport.

According to Pasban Democratic Party, University Road, a crucial artery in Karachi, is vital for daily commuters. However, the Red Line BRT project, which began in 2022, has resulted in inconveniences such as congestion and diversions. Initially estimated at Rs79 billion, the project's cost has surged to approximately Rs103 billion, with the completion deadline now extended to June 2027.

Shakoor highlighted concerns over the financial implications of the delays and questioned the efficiency of project planning and coordination. He criticized the Sindh government's repeated announcements of shorter deadlines, which have yet to materialize, emphasizing the importance of accountability and governance.

Shakoor also pointed out the economic impact on citizens and businesses, with increased traffic leading to lost productivity and higher fuel consumption. He stressed the need for a culture of delivery in Karachi, urging the government to publish a comprehensive progress report detailing the project's costs, delays, and revised timeline.

The PDP Chairman advocated for using modern technology to monitor infrastructure projects, suggesting tools such as GIS mapping and AI-assisted monitoring to ensure timely completion. He concluded that the ongoing saga of University Road serves as a wake-up call for urban governance in Karachi.
