University of Lahore Forms Academic Alliance to Combat Air Pollution

Lahore: The University of Lahore (UOL) has announced the establishment of the Lahore Academic Alliance for Climate Action (LAACA), a significant collaboration with eight local universities aimed at addressing Lahore’s critical air pollution issues. Initiated on June 12, 2024, this coalition seeks to harness academic resources and data-driven strategies to tackle environmental challenges and promote sustainability.

According to The University of Lahore, the initiative is spearheaded by Prof Dr. Rabia Akhtar, Director of the Center for Security, Strategy and Policy Research (CSSPR) at UOL, and Dr. Aazir Khan, Director of the Integrated Engineering Centre of Excellence (IECE). LAACA includes University of the Punjab, Government College University Lahore, University of Management and Technology, Forman Christian College University, Beaconhouse National University, University of Central Punjab, University of South Asia, and Kinnaird College for Women University.

A critical element of LAACA’s strategy is the deployment of the UOL Weather and Air Quality Integrated Apparatus (WAQIA), designed by IECE to monitor and analyze air quality. Each partner university will be equipped with two of these devices to facilitate comprehensive pollution data collection and aid in developing effective air quality improvement measures.

The launch event was marked by the presence of Mr. Uzair Raoof, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Governors at UOL, who emphasized the necessity of collaborative efforts in combating climate change. The event included detailed presentations on the project’s objectives and implementation strategies, followed by discussions with representatives from the partner universities.

The representatives expressed their commitment to the initiative, highlighting the role of the new air quality monitors in enhancing their current environmental strategies and the importance of legislative efforts and community engagement in driving effective change.

LAACA’s approach not only focuses on technological solutions but also on community involvement, including the appointment of student ambassadors to educate and mobilize the university community towards sustainability.

This initiative represents a comprehensive effort to mitigate the environmental impact of Lahore’s severe air pollution, particularly during the winter months when smog levels are at their highest. By leveraging academic expertise and innovative technologies, LAACA aims to create a sustainable model for urban environmental management and public health advocacy in Lahore.
