London: Former England Test captain Ben Stokes has expressed confidence in Joe Root and newly appointed head coach Stephen Fleming, predicting a successful collaboration as England seeks to improve its standing in the current ICC World Test Championship cycle. England is currently ranked seventh in the World Test Championship 2025-27 standings and is preparing to host Pakistan for a three-match Test series.

According to International Cricket Council, Stokes' remarks came during a conversation with Jos Buttler and Stuart Broad on the For the Love of Cricket Podcast. Stokes emphasized his support for Root, who has returned to the captaincy, and Fleming, who replaces Brendon McCullum following England's recent Test series defeat against New Zealand. Stokes conveyed his hope for Root's success and highlighted Fleming's capabilities as a coach, stating, "He's a great man. I've worked with Flem before."

Stokes, who retired from playing, clarified that he has no intention of returning to the England squad unless it is in a leadership capacity. At 35, he acknowledged the challenges of continuing as a player without the captaincy, remarking on his dedication to the role during his career. He also expressed aspirations of transitioning to a coaching role in the future, noting that he is working towards completing his Level Three coaching qualification. The possibility of coaching the national team someday is an ambition he openly shared.

Root's leadership will be tested when England faces Pakistan, starting on August 19 in Leeds. Marcus Trescothick, a former England opener, will serve as interim coach for the series, with Fleming set to assume the head coach position afterward.
