KARACHI: In a recent announcement, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah declared the formation of a specialized task force to investigate water-related issues affecting the province. This initiative will focus on the Indus Waters Treaty and the 1991 Water Apportionment Accord, highlighting disparities in water distribution and addressing the challenges faced by Sindh.

According to Chief Minister Sindh, the task force will comprise experts tasked with assessing potential risks tied to existing treaties and identifying water-sharing gaps. The Chief Minister emphasized that Sindh has persistently received less than its allocated share of water, pointing to ongoing concerns over India's water policies and their impact on Pakistan. The provincial cabinet is set to discuss the establishment of this task force in its upcoming meeting.

Addressing the issue of wheat hoarding, Mr. Shah noted that Sindh had achieved a record production of 4.9 million tonnes this year, with sufficient stocks available nationwide. The provincial government has recovered over 200,000 tonnes of wheat from hoarders and is working in conjunction with the federal government to ensure market availability without resorting to imports.

On matters concerning missing children, the Chief Minister assured that the government is intensifying efforts to address the issue, with the provincial home minister overseeing progress. He urged citizens to remain calm and cooperate with authorities in ongoing recoveries.

During the First IAP and PSOA International Insurance Conference 2026, Mr. Shah announced mandatory motor third-party insurance for vehicles registered in Sindh, and outlined exemptions for crop insurance from sales tax to protect farmers. The provincial government is also implementing broader insurance coverage to enhance road safety and support the welfare of citizens.
