Karachi: The Sindh Assembly has officially passed a resolution calling for the release of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, reflecting a significant legislative support for her case, which has captivated national attention and evoked strong political responses.
According to Aafia Movement, Dr. Fowzia Siddiqui, chairperson of the Global Aafia Movement and a renowned neurophysician, expressed appreciation for the resolution initiated by Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) MPA Muhammad Farooq. The resolution gained backing from various political groups within the assembly, including the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), and independent MPAs, signaling a unified stance across different political spectrums.
During the assembly session, MPA Muhammad Farooq emphasized Pakistan’s longstanding cooperation with the United States in Afghanistan and expressed the need for a robust follow-up on the U.S. government for Siddiqui’s release. He highlighted the perceived inequities in Siddiqui’s trial in the U.S., where he claimed she was denied the right to a fair defense.
Dr. Fowzia Siddiqui, echoing Farooq’s remarks, called for strong, united support from all political parties and the Pakistani populace to press the U.S. for Siddiqui’s release, underscoring the strategic assistance Pakistan has provided to the U.S. over the years.
