Sammer Sultan Endows Historic Chair in History at Habib University

Karachi: Sammer Sultan, Co-Chairwoman of Shan Foods, has established the Sammer Sultan Endowed Chair in History, Heritage & Archives at Habib University. This marks the first endowed academic chair of its kind in Pakistan, housed within the University's Comparative Humanities program. The endowment will support a distinguished faculty position focused on preserving and revitalizing Pakistan's historical and cultural records.

According to Habib University, the creation of this chair addresses the challenges posed by Pakistan's incomplete historical narrative and aims to fill the epistemic gaps that have resulted from decades of neglect and selective historical interpretation. The chair is designed to transform philanthropic commitment into a sustained scholarly platform, ensuring the continuous study and preservation of Pakistan's intellectual and cultural heritage.

Sammer Sultan emphasized the importance of preserving historical memory as a foundation for a society's endurance, articulating this belief during her keynote address at Habib University's President's Dinner for the Class of 2026. The endowed chair reflects her conviction that meaningful academic work is built on the permanence of institutions and the recovery of historical narratives, rather than temporary initiatives.

The endowed chair is anticipated to be a catalyst for intellectual leadership at Habib University, positioning it as a center for global academic discourse on heritage preservation. The chair holder will lead original research, contribute to global academic publications, and foster international dialogue on cultural memory and archival practices.

Beyond research, the chair will enrich the academic experience for undergraduates at Habib University by introducing specialized courses on archives and historical preservation. These courses aim to train future scholars and cultural stewards with the analytical tools and ethical orientation necessary for the field.

Habib University's President Wasif Rizvi acknowledged the significance of the endowment, underscoring its alignment with the university's mission to reclaim indigenous knowledge systems and strengthen its academic infrastructure. The Sammer Sultan Endowed Chair is seen as an enduring investment that will enrich the university's intellectual mission for generations, transforming philanthropic conviction into lasting institutional capacity.
