President Zardari Unveils Skills Development Initiative for Workforce Empowerment

Karachi: President Asif Ali Zardari has introduced the ‘Benazir Hunarmand Programme,’ a new initiative aimed at empowering Pakistan’s skilled workforce through education and training. The program was launched in a ceremony attended by prominent figures, including First Lady Aseefa Bhutto Zardari.

In his address, President Zardari emphasized the necessity of education and skill development, highlighting the need for every household to have access to learning tools. He linked the new program to the enduring philosophy of Zulfikar Bhutto and Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, advocating for inclusive prosperity and education for all.

The President pointed out that skills development is essential not only for national advancement but also for fulfilling the rising demands of international markets. He urged for a focus on modern technical skills and gave special attention to the nursing profession, which is in high demand globally. Additionally, he stressed the importance of learning foreign languages to enhance job opportunities abroad.

Reflecting on his previous tenure, President Zardari recalled the launch of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), a pivotal social protection initiative in Pakistan. He expressed gratitude to former Finance Minister Naveed Qamar for his role in BISP’s success and announced plans for its further enhancement.

President Zardari described the Benazir Hunarmand Programme as a continuation of this legacy, aimed at community upliftment through empowerment and opportunity. He reiterated his commitment to equipping Pakistan’s youth with the skills and education necessary for a prosperous future. The launch coincided with the birthday of Benazir Bhutto Shaheed, a day of remembrance and reflection for the Pakistan People’s Party.

Senator Rubina Khalid, Chairperson of BISP, emphasized that the program had emerged as the largest social protection initiative in Pakistan, benefiting 10 million families and providing critical assistance during crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. She noted that the Benazir Hunarmand Programme, leveraging BISP’s database, aims to create an empowered, self-reliant citizenry.

The program is set to offer practical, demand-driven training in various fields, promoting economic and social transformation. Khalid expressed gratitude to international partners, including the German government, for their support in these development initiatives.

The event, attended by dignitaries including Governor Punjab Sardar Saleem Haider, concluded with a cake-cutting ceremony in honor of Benazir Bhutto Shaheed’s birthday.
