Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari emphasized the critical need for innovation and cooperation to ensure food security in Pakistan, marking World Food Day with a call to strengthen the country's agricultural capacity. The theme for this year, "Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow," underscores the importance of utilizing science and technology to enhance agrifood systems for current and future generations.
According to Pakistan Peoples Party, President Zardari highlighted agriculture's vital role in Pakistan's economy and the challenges faced by farmers due to climate change, water scarcity, and rising production costs. He called for modernization of agriculture through scientific research and technological advancements, including climate-smart practices and improved market access for farmers. Zardari stressed the importance of inclusive participation from smallholder farmers, women, and youth in these efforts.
Food security, Zardari noted, extends beyond production, requiring equitable access to safe and nutritious food. He called for reducing food loss, improving food safety, and prioritizing vulnerable communities. The president also emphasized that innovation must address practical challenges and ensure benefits for farmers and consumers.
Moreover, Zardari pointed out that conflicts can disrupt food supply chains and highlighted the need for a peaceful environment to foster innovation and cooperation. He urged for collaborative efforts among governments, researchers, and international partners to advance food security and address the challenges faced by the agricultural sector.
