Islamabad: On the International Day of Democracy, President Asif Ali Zardari of Pakistan emphasized the nation's commitment to democratic governance, highlighting the importance of sovereignty, equality, freedom, and justice. The president's message underscored the essential role of democracy in giving citizens a voice and ensuring accountability from those in power.

According to Pakistan Peoples Party, President Zardari stated that democracy not only provides a platform for the majority to lead but also requires the inclusion and respect for minority voices. He stressed that true democracy involves accommodating legitimate rights and views of all, thereby addressing the longstanding challenges faced by Pakistan.

Zardari acknowledged the significant contributions of past leaders, notably Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, under whose leadership the Constitution of 1973 was adopted, laying the foundation for Pakistan's federal parliamentary system. He also paid tribute to Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto for her sacrifices for democracy.

The president called for a renewed commitment to uphold the Constitution, protect fundamental rights, and ensure active participation of women, youth, and minorities in national affairs. He emphasized that while democracy can be tumultuous, it remains the most effective system for governance, with the people's will as its cornerstone.
