President Zardari Emphasizes Accessibility on International White Cane Safety Day

KARACHI: President Asif Ali Zardari extended greetings and best wishes to individuals who are blind or partially sighted, along with their families and organizations dedicated to their welfare and empowerment, on the occasion of International White Cane Safety Day. Zardari highlighted the significance of the white cane as a vital mobility aid that facilitates safe and independent movement for visually impaired persons, enabling access to education, employment, public services, and other facets of everyday life.

According to Pakistan Peoples Party, Zardari emphasized that independent mobility is contingent upon the environment in which individuals live. He underscored the necessity of safe roads and footpaths, accessible public transport, and buildings to ensure that people with disabilities can fully participate in society. He acknowledged the Government of Sindh for establishing the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, a dedicated body focused on the rehabilitation, empowerment, and welfare of disabled individuals. Zardari suggested that similar institutional arrangements in other provinces could provide sustained attention to disability-related issues.

The president also noted the role of modern technologies and artificial intelligence in creating new opportunities for individuals with visual disabilities, while affirming the white cane's status as a reliable tool for independent mobility. He commended the Pakistan Association of the Blind and similar organizations for their efforts in promoting the rights and safety of visually impaired individuals. In his message, Zardari called for increased focus on accessibility in public spaces and services to enable persons with disabilities to move independently, pursue opportunities, and engage fully in community life.
