Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari has sanctioned a 180-day special remission in sentences for eligible prisoners to mark Eid Milad-un-Nabi (Peace Be Upon Him) 2025. This decision has been made under Article 45 of the Constitution, reflecting a gesture of clemency and compassion.
The announcement followed recommendations from the Prime Minister and the Federal Cabinet, who initially advised a 100-day reduction. However, after comprehensive discussions, the President decided to extend the remission to 180 days, a change that was supported by the Prime Minister.
The remission is applicable only to prisoners who meet the legal criteria. Individuals convicted of severe offenses such as murder, terrorism, espionage, and significant financial crimes are not eligible for this special remission.
This move aligns with the government’s efforts to observe religious occasions with acts of goodwill, while maintaining the integrity of the justice system by excluding those convicted of serious crimes.
