Karachi: Pasban Democratic Party Vice Chairman Abdul Hakim Quaid has urged the Prime Minister to take immediate action to alleviate the public’s financial burden caused by rising electricity prices. He emphasized the need to eliminate extra charges and unfair slabs in electricity bills, as these have become intolerable for the populace.
According to Pasban Democratic Party, the government’s current measures, such as the announced subsidy under the winter package, are contradictory due to simultaneous rate increases by distribution companies, which exacerbate the public’s hardships.
Quaid criticized the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) for failing to protect public interests and called for the rejection of unnecessary electricity price hikes. He advocated for enhanced transparency and accountability to prevent distribution companies from imposing additional charges. Furthermore, he highlighted the importance of strict monitoring of these companies by the government and Nepra to prevent undue increases and ensure that the Prime Minister’s winter package is genuinely beneficial, offering affordable electricity during the colder months.
The party vice chairman also suggested that Nepra engage with public opinion and experts when making decisions to safeguard public interests. He proposed the removal of unnecessary surcharges and the establishment of a simple, fair slab system that provides electricity at reasonable rates, aligned with people’s basic needs.
