NA-208 Election Results Reveal Low Voter Support for Winning Candidate

Shaheed Benazirabad: In the 2024 General Elections, the Member of the National Assembly (MNA) elected from NA-208 Shaheed Benazirabad-II garnered 127,181 votes, representing 58% of the 219,282 ballots cast, but only 30% of the 429,942 registered voters in the constituency. The First-Past-The-Post (FPTP) electoral system in Pakistan requires only the highest vote share to win a seat, not a majority.

According to Free and Fair Election Network, the Final Consolidated Result (Form-49) of the constituency reported a voter turnout of 51%. NA-208 was one of 70 out of 266 National Assembly constituencies where the winner secured 50% or more of the polled votes. However, a significant proportion of voters, 80,041 or 37%, did not support the winning candidate. Additionally, the winner's share among total registered voters was only 30%.

The runner-up in the constituency received 27% of the votes, while the third candidate secured 3%. The remaining candidates collectively received 6% of the votes cast. A total of 12,060 votes, or 5%, were declared invalid. This analysis forms part of FAFEN's broader study on electoral representativeness across Pakistan's 266 National Assembly constituencies. The data reveals that under the FPTP system, many elected members do not have majority support. In contrast, a proportional representation system would allocate seats based on the proportion of votes received, better reflecting voter preferences. The 2024 election data highlights the gap between votes cast and representation secured across all constituencies.
