ISLAMABAD: First Lady Asifa Bhutto Zardari has underscored the importance of community engagement, public trust, and inclusive leadership as essential components for sustainable development. In an article published on the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Pakistan website, she stressed that solutions must be informed by the needs and experiences of local communities.
According to Pakistan Peoples Party, Asifa Bhutto Zardari reflected on the legacy of her mother, Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, emphasizing that public service is deeply rooted in listening to people, understanding their concerns, and standing with those whose voices often go unheard. The first lady highlighted the challenges posed by climate change, conflicts, economic pressures, inequality, and displacement, advocating for collective action and stronger partnerships to address these issues.
Drawing on her experiences across Pakistan, she argued that development should be gauged not only through policies and programs but by tangible improvements in people's lives, such as greater family security, better opportunities for children, and stronger communities. She acknowledged the critical role of frontline health workers in the country's polio eradication efforts, noting their engagement with families and trust-building endeavors as pivotal as vaccine delivery.
Asifa Bhutto Zardari also recognized the contribution of the Benazir Income Support Programme in providing social protection and easing economic hardships for vulnerable families. Addressing climate-related challenges, she mentioned the recurring floods and heatwaves in Pakistan, citing the 2022 floods as a reminder of the need for community resilience and long-term recovery planning.
The first lady praised the Sindh People's Housing for Flood Affectees (SPHF) initiative for its climate-resilient reconstruction efforts, aiding flood-affected families in rebuilding safer homes and livelihoods. She emphasized investing in young people through education and expanded opportunities, while highlighting the role of women as community leaders and agents of change.
Stressing the importance of international cooperation, Asifa Bhutto Zardari called for collaborative efforts among governments, international organizations, civil society, and local communities to tackle challenges such as poverty, public health emergencies, and climate change. She acknowledged UNDP's role in supporting institutional development and resilience, maintaining that sustainable progress relies on cooperation and a shared commitment to improving people's lives.
The first lady concluded by stating that lasting change begins in communities, where trust is built, and individuals are empowered to shape their futures through meaningful participation and inclusive leadership.
