Digital Defenders: UET Lahore’s Initiative on Online Safety

Lahore: The Zimal Society at the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore, in collaboration with the Women Development Department, Government of the Punjab, hosted an awareness session focused on digital safety. The event, part of the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence Campaign, aimed to promote responsible online behavior and combat digital abuse.

The session, titled “Digital Defenders: Empowering Society Against Online Abuse,” featured talks from Ms. Ammarah Wakeel, Chief Minister Female Ambassador for Women Wellbeing, and Rohini Lakshané, who participated online to share insights on AI-facilitated and image-based digital abuse. Legal guidance on cyber harassment and digital rights was provided by Ms. Minahil Farooq.

Additional Secretary of the Women Development Department, Ms. Faiza Ahsan, served as the chief guest. She highlighted the importance of creating safer digital environments, particularly for young internet users.

The event saw attendance from Pro Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Nasir Hayat, Advisor Zimal Society Dr. Rehana Sharif, Student Counselor Dr. Tayyaba Mushtaq, faculty members, and numerous students. As the session concluded, Dr. Nasir Hayat presented souvenirs to the speakers in appreciation of their contributions.

The program ended with a renewed commitment from the university community to oppose all forms of violence, both physical and digital, and to cultivate a culture of awareness and accountability on campus.
