Islamabad: At the 27th Sustainable Development Conference, Acting President Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani underscored Pakistan’s commitment to achieving sustainability goals through innovative technologies and responsible citizenship. He emphasized the need for concerted efforts to tackle the challenges posed by climate change and to enhance the nation’s resilience.
According to Pakistan Peoples Party, the Acting President highlighted various national initiatives during his speech at the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) event in Islamabad. He noted the pivotal role of advancements in artificial intelligence and blockchain in promoting social protection and inclusive growth. His address also touched on the essential practices for sustainable living that demand both community engagement and policy-level commitment.
Gilani commended the concurrent Sustainability Investment Expo 2024, which showcased emerging technologies pivotal for sustainable development partnerships and investment opportunities. The theme of the conference, “From Fragility to Resilience: Enhancing Sustainable Development,” reflects the critical need for strategic innovations and adaptability in governance to transform vulnerabilities into strengths.
He elaborated on Pakistan’s efforts against climate impacts, pointing out the nation’s alignment of Vision 2025 with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to ensure comprehensive welfare and equitable growth. The Acting President proudly referenced the Benazir Income Support Program’s role in providing crucial financial support to millions, reinforcing the government’s broader economic reforms aimed at poverty reduction and inclusive growth.
Further illustrating Pakistan’s green initiatives, Gilani mentioned the Parliament’s transition to solar energy and the establishment of dedicated climate change committees, marking significant strides in integrating SDGs into the national development agenda.
The conference concluded with a strong call to action from Gilani to reduce poverty, bridge gender disparities, and push for environmental conservation, highlighting that empowering women and ensuring gender equality are essential for sustainable development.
