Nahida Akter Appointed as Bangladesh’s T20I Captain, Replacing Sultana Joty

Dhaka: Bangladesh has appointed left-arm spinner Nahida Akter as the new captain of their T20I cricket team, replacing long-time skipper Nigar Sultana Joty, who stepped down to focus on her batting. Nahida, who has played over 100 T20I matches for Bangladesh, will be joined by new vice-captain Sobhana Mostary as they prepare for their first challenge at the ICC Women's Emerging Trophy event next month.

According to International Cricket Council, the decision to appoint Nahida was confirmed by Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) women's wing chairman, Rafiqul Islam Babu. Nahida, 25, will hold the captaincy for at least one year, after which the board will reassess the situation ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup in 2028. Joty expressed her support for Nahida through social media, stating her commitment to continue playing alongside the new captain and offering her assistance for the team's success.

Joty, who took over as Bangladesh's T20I captain in 2022, led the team to 32 wins in 82 matches and played a significant role in their performance at the 2023, 2024, and 2026 ICC Women's T20 World Cups. Her leadership culminated in a memorable victory over Pakistan in the 2026 edition.
