Lahore: Punjab University Pakistan Study Centre organized a seminar titled "Conflict in the Gulf Region: Implications for Pakistan," featuring Professor Dr. Hasan Askari Rizvi as the keynote speaker. The event, attended by faculty and students, explored the geopolitical significance of the Gulf region and its impact on Pakistan's economic, security, and diplomatic interests.
According to University of the Punjab, Dr. Askari's lecture highlighted the complex relationships in the Gulf, emphasizing the strategic importance of energy resources and maritime routes. He discussed the implications of Gulf conflicts for countries like Pakistan, which rely on stable energy supplies and have significant overseas communities in the region. Dr. Askari noted that the traditional security structures in the Gulf are shifting, citing the reduced effectiveness of U.S. forces and the growing influence of Russia and China.
Dr. Askari also addressed Pakistan's diplomatic achievements, such as gaining recognition from both the U.S. and Iran. He pointed out Pakistan's critical stance following the 2025 U.S.-Israel attack on Iran and the subsequent challenges in implementing a U.S.-Iran Memorandum of Understanding. He underscored the longstanding security agreements between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, which have evolved since the late 1960s, and highlighted Pakistan's role in defending Saudi territories.
Dr. Magsi, Director of PSC, stressed the importance of understanding the interplay between regional security and foreign policy. He outlined the potential consequences of Gulf instability for Pakistan's energy security, economic stability, and trade. Emphasizing a balanced foreign policy, he called for informed analysis and diplomatic engagement to address the region's complex challenges.
The seminar is part of the PSC's ongoing efforts to foster academic discussion on issues relevant to Pakistan's strategic environment. Through such initiatives, the Centre aims to promote research and dialogue among faculty, researchers, and students on contemporary geopolitical challenges.
