Shai Hope’s Record-Breaking Performance Leads West Indies to Historic Win Over India

New Chandigarh: West Indies finished their ODI series against India on a high note, achieving a historic victory in New Chandigarh by successfully chasing down a formidable target of 352 runs. The triumph was highlighted by Shai Hope's exceptional performance, as he scored 162 and set several records in the process.

According to International Cricket Council, Hope's innings not only marked the highest score by a West Indies batter in a successful ODI run-chase but also made him the first wicketkeeper-captain to score over 150 runs in an ODI innings. His achievements surpassed Brian Lara's 33-year-old record of 153 runs set against Pakistan in 1993. Although the West Indies lost the series, they impressed with their determination against the higher-ranked Indian team.

India, having won the toss, elected to bat first and posted a competitive total, bolstered by KL Rahul's unbeaten 129 and significant contributions from Rohit Sharma and Ruturaj Gaikwad. Despite early setbacks, Rahul's quick fifty ensured India reached a strong position.

In response, West Indies needed a solid start, which Hope provided with a series of aggressive strokes. Despite losing John Campbell early, Amir Jangoo supported Hope well, and the duo capitalized on the favorable batting conditions. Despite some middle-order stumbles, Hope, with help from Sherfane Rutherford and Keemo Paul, maintained the chase's momentum.

As the match progressed into the final overs, Hope's strategic play and a crucial cameo from Gudakesh Motie helped West Indies secure the win with 10 balls to spare. The series now moves to a five-game T20I contest starting on October 6 in Lucknow.
