KARACHI: The Health Department of the Government of Sindh, Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), and Aga Khan University (AKU) have entered a groundbreaking agreement to integrate a National AI Hub for Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health into the public healthcare system. This initiative aims to leverage artificial intelligence to enhance healthcare delivery for vulnerable women and children.

According to Lahore University of Management Sciences, the three-year Letter of Collaboration is supported by a multi-year grant from the Gates Foundation. The agreement was signed by Health Secretary Tahir Hussain, LUMS Associate Professor Dr. Maryam Mustafa, and AKU's Dean Dr. Karim Damji in the presence of Dr. Anita Zaidi from the Gates Foundation. The AI Hub will incorporate risk-stratification models, clinical decision-support systems, and voice-assisted tools to aid frontline healthcare providers.

Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho, Sindh Minister for Health and Population Welfare, emphasized the focus on primary health facilities to improve health outcomes. The collaboration draws on the expertise of AKU's Dr. Fyezah Jehan, whose work provides the clinical foundation for developing accurate predictive algorithms tailored to low-resource environments.

Dr. Karim Damji highlighted the partnership's potential to improve maternal and child health by making AI solutions cost-effective and efficient. Dr. Maryam Mustafa noted the importance of establishing a data infrastructure to facilitate the adoption and scaling of AI tools across Pakistan, ensuring even remote areas benefit from technological advancements.

The collaboration involves strategic oversight from the Sindh Health Department, technical expertise from LUMS in model development and speech technologies, and clinical research and implementation guidance from AKU. The partnership adheres to national regulatory standards and ethical guidelines, maintaining a commitment to using AI as a supportive tool in healthcare delivery.
