Johannesburg: South Africa's head coach, Shukri Conrad, has reported encouraging progress in the recovery of fast bowler Kagiso Rabada from a right hamstring injury sustained in mid-August. Rabada's fitness remains crucial for the upcoming ICC World Test Championship series against Australia, which begins on October 9.
According to International Cricket Council, coach Conrad expressed optimism about Rabada's rehabilitation, stating that the fast bowler is following a structured recovery program. "It's going quite nicely, the rehab and the programs that he's on. I'd be very surprised if we didn't see him during the Test series," Conrad remarked. Rabada, a key player for the Proteas, is known for delivering standout performances against Australia, making his potential return significant for the team's prospects.
The three-Test series, hosted at venues including Kingsmead in Durban, St George's Park in Gqeberha, and Newlands in Cape Town, could play a decisive role in the World Test Championship standings, where South Africa currently trails Australia. Rabada's past performances against Australia, including a remarkable nine-wicket haul in the 2025 WTC Final, underscore his value to the team.
Conrad indicated that a decision on Rabada's participation would be made soon, after further assessment of his condition. The team is cautious about risking Rabada's fitness given the demanding summer schedule ahead. "I think we'll obviously have a really good idea close this week sometime, when he'll have had a few weeks of intensive treatment. By all accounts, things are looking really good," he added.
Despite the potential absence of Rabada, Conrad remains confident in the team's ability to adapt. Reflecting on past successes without key players, he noted, "You don't replace someone like KG at the drop of a hat. But I think we've shown in the past...that whoever needs to step up is able to do that." The Proteas have demonstrated resilience in previous series, achieving victories without their top performers, and Conrad believes this adaptability is a defining trait of the squad.
