Larkana: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Sindh President Nisar Ahmed Khuhro emphasized the importance of adhering to the Constitution as the foundational framework for governance in Pakistan during a speech at a ceremony organized by the Peoples Lawyers Forum at the Larkana Bar. Khuhro highlighted past threats to the Constitution, the significance of the 18th Amendment, and issues surrounding the creation of new provinces.
According to Pakistan Peoples Party, Khuhro underscored the historical role of the PPP in framing the country's unanimously approved Constitution, crediting Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto for this achievement. He noted that the Constitution has faced multiple assaults, including suspensions by undemocratic governments, but was restored through the 18th Amendment. This amendment, Khuhro said, abolished Article 58(2)(b), which was previously used to dissolve democratic governments, and shifted powers from the President to Parliament.
Khuhro expressed concern over recent discussions about creating new provinces, particularly in Sindh, which he said were rejected by the Sindh Assembly through a unanimous resolution. He argued that if new provinces are to be created, it should be in accordance with the wishes of the respective provincial assemblies of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He criticized a federal minister for inciting unrest over this issue and involving the Pakistan Army, which remains neutral as clarified by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
The PPP leader addressed the economic significance of Sindh, citing its agriculture, mineral resources, coal, and seaport as reasons for attempts to sow disorder in the province. He emphasized that while governance can be improved, it should not necessitate the creation of new provinces. Khuhro called for respect towards Sindh's integrity and warned against statements that could lead to unrest similar to that in Balochistan.
Reflecting on the historical struggle for provincial autonomy, Khuhro highlighted its eventual achievement in 2010, decades after it was promised. He praised the role of lawyers as guardians of the Constitution and reiterated the PPP's commitment to constitutional supremacy and democratic continuity, citing the party's support for the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government formation as a strategic move to stabilize the political landscape.
The ceremony also saw speeches from local leaders, including Larkana Mayor Advocate Anwar Ali Lehar and others, who echoed Khuhro's sentiments on constitutional respect and governance.
