Islamabad: Addressing the Pakistan Business Council, Senator Sherry Rehman highlighted the critical role of women's economic empowerment in boosting Pakistan's GDP, emphasizing the need for recognition, equal rights, and opportunities for women in the workforce. According to Pakistan Peoples Party, Senator Rehman cited estimates from the World Bank, suggesting that increasing women's economic participation could add approximately $80 billion to Pakistan's GDP. She stressed the importance of moving beyond mere representation to actual empowerment, ensuring women receive equal pay, mentorship, and leadership opportunities.

According to the press release, Senator Rehman underscored the hidden subsidy of women's unpaid work in Pakistan's economy, noting that the country has one of the lowest female labor force participation rates in South Asia. She called for businesses to provide safe reporting mechanisms, maternity protections, and clear pathways for women to advance in their careers. Senator Rehman also addressed the structural wage gap, highlighting that women earn significantly less than men and emphasized the necessity of addressing gender-based violence and implementing stronger workplace protections.
