Teacher Training Program Enhances Preschoolers’ Social Skills in Pakistan, Study Reveals

Karachi: A new study spearheaded by Dr. Seema Lasi of Aga Khan University, in partnership with researchers from Ball State University, has revealed that providing structured training in social-emotional learning to preschool teachers significantly enhances classroom quality and reduces behavioral issues among children in Pakistan. This initiative presents a low-cost, scalable model for the country's public schools.

According to Aga Khan University, the study's findings, published in the peer-reviewed ECNU Review of Education, highlight the importance of equipping teachers with the necessary tools to foster environments conducive to early childhood development. The research, which tracked 410 preschool children and 24 teachers across 12 public schools in Karachi over four months, demonstrated that trained teachers could create nurturing settings that positively influence children's lifelong outcomes.

The study employed a quasi-experimental design, with teachers in the intervention group receiving 48 hours of training focused on social-emotional learning, alongside ongoing mentorship. The results indicated substantial improvements in classroom quality, characterized by stronger teacher-student interactions, improved classroom management, and more engaging instructional practices.

Children taught by trained teachers exhibited significant advancements in social-emotional development, with fewer behavioral difficulties observed compared to those in control schools. The study suggests that these improvements can be realized even in resource-constrained settings, offering a viable model for broader application in Pakistan and similar contexts.

Key recommendations from the study include integrating social-emotional learning training into teacher education, expanding professional development programs in public schools, and prioritizing the quality of classroom interactions in conjunction with curriculum delivery. By enhancing teachers' capacities in promoting social-emotional learning, Pakistan can advance towards more inclusive and holistic early childhood education.
