PU CSAS Hosts Seminar on ‘Jinnah and Ambedkar: Competing Visions on Freedom’

Lahore: Punjab University Centre for South Asian Studies (CSAS), in partnership with Jinnah-Ambedkar Chair, organized a seminar titled 'Jinnah and Ambedkar: Competing Visions on Freedom'. The event gathered notable speakers including the Director of CSAS, Prof Dr. Naheed S. Goraya, and Advocate of the Supreme Court, Barrister Asad Rahim Khan, along with PhD and MPhil scholars and students.

According to University of the Punjab, the seminar delved into the political philosophies and visions of freedom of Muhammad Ali Jinnah and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, significant figures in the history of the Sub-Continent. Barrister Asad provided an analysis of their views on constitutionalism, minority rights, federalism, and democracy. He discussed Jinnah's advocacy for a separate homeland due to concerns over Muslim political safeguards and Ambedkar's focus on social democracy, constitutional morality, and caste annihilation as vital for true freedom. Prof Dr. Naheed S. Goraya thanked Barrister Asad for his contributions and the participants for their involvement. The seminar offered insights into the complexities of freedom, representation, and identity in the late colonial period.
