Islamabad Local Government Elections Cancelled Again Amid Structural Changes

Islamabad: The Election Commission of Pakistan has announced the cancellation of the Local Government Elections in Islamabad Capital Territory, marking the fourth postponement of the polls. The decision follows recent amendments in the local government structure enacted through a presidential ordinance.

According to Free and Fair Election Network, the Election Commission of Pakistan recalled the previously issued election schedule in response to the Islamabad Capital Territory Local Government (Amendment) Ordinance, 2026. The ordinance, introduced by the federal government on January 9, 2026, modifies the structure of local governments and the procedure for conducting elections in Islamabad.

This cancellation adds to the history of repeated delays since the election schedule was first announced in June 2022. Subsequent schedules were issued in October 2022 and August 2024, only to be postponed. Since 2021, the Commission has undertaken delimitation of union councils multiple times, driven by ongoing legislative and administrative changes. The number of union councils has been adjusted upward on three occasions since the previous local governments concluded their terms. The commission will proceed with delimitation in accordance with the new ordinance.
