Sargodha: The University of Sargodha recently hosted a seminar titled “US Sikh Returns Home to Pakistan: Reflections & Responses,” focusing on themes of heritage, belonging, diaspora experiences, and interfaith harmony. The event was a collaborative effort by the Department of History & Pakistan Studies and the Department of Punjabi Language, Literature & Culture.
Dr. Tarunjit Singh Butalia from Ohio State University served as the chief guest, offering insights into the emotional, cultural, and spiritual dimensions of his return visits to Pakistan. Faculty members, including Dr. Muhammad Abrar Zahoor and Dr. Munir Gujjar, along with students, participated actively in the event.
Dr. Zahoor emphasized the importance of academic discussions on diaspora communities, particularly those with historical ties to the region. He acknowledged Pakistan’s Sikh heritage as a crucial part of South Asian cultural history.
In his address, Dr. Butalia reflected on his initial 12-day visit to Pakistan, which he described as profoundly emotional. He shared that the hospitality he received challenged media narratives and inspired him to document his experiences in a book. Dr. Butalia expressed gratitude for the consistent warmth and respect he encountered during his travels.
The seminar included a cultural segment where Ilyas Gondal recited classical poetry by Waris Shah, celebrating Punjabi culture. Dr. Munir Gujjar, in his concluding remarks, underscored the enduring significance of Punjabi language and literature in fostering community connections.
The event concluded with a Q&A session, enhancing participants’ appreciation for Sikh-Punjabi heritage and the importance of cross-cultural engagement.
