Webinar on Research methods in film studies: Exploring movies as historical documents

Islamabad, June 06, 2023 (PPI-OT): The Department of English was honoured to have an esteemed and renowned expert Dr. Muhammad Kamal Khan, for a ground-breaking Webinar on “Research methods in film studies: Exploring movies as historical documents”. Dr. Muhammad Kamal Khan is currently pursuing his Fulbright postdoc fellowship at the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP), United States. His profound knowledge and insights left the audience spelled bound enriching their understanding of the subject matter. This Webinar revolved around the recent trends in research and provided invaluable information by delving into the realm of research in the field of English Literature. It enlightened the scholarly capabilities and ignited a passion for research among MPhil and PhD students. The Webinar also featured an interactive questions and answer session at the end and this lively exchange of ideas and information further enriched the learning experience for everyone involved.

In her thank you note, Dr. Shabnum Sayyed Hussain, the Associate Dean of the Faculty of Languages and Literature and moderator of the webinar expressed her gratitude towards Dr. Khan for his valuable contribution and fostering a culture of research and critical thinking among the graduate students at MY university. The Webinar conducted by Dr. Muhammad Kamal Khan, was packed with a substantial amount of pertinent information especially for a 2-hour session in a very engaging manner. Through this webinar Dr. Muhammad Kamal has been able to not only motivate us to research in the area of Film studies but also nudge us into looking at films as matter for research and that too in some very interesting ways. Being an enthusiast and potential researcher on movies, this session opened many horizons of insight for me I never knew before. It unfolded what research significance a movie might have, how it should be conducted and why it carries more scope than the traditional forms of written text-based research. The session also provided a great technical road map of how to start and accomplish rigorous research on different kinds of movies. Thanks to Dr. Shabnam Sahiba and Dr. Muhammad Kamal who brought more than a complete package for all of us (Naveed Zafar, PhD Scholar).

It was an amazing experience to have an online webinar with Dr Muhammad Kamal Khan on “Methods of Research on Film Studies and Movies as Historical Documents”. Dr Khan very eloquently expressed his views on Film Studies as an emerging field of Research on modern day Digital Literature. He explained film theory and its utility to understand the meanings in different genres of historical movies (Sohail Qamar, PhD Scholar).
