Punjab Health Minister Advocates Thalassaemia Screening at Awareness Seminar

Lahore: An awareness seminar on Thalassaemia Prevention was held at Fatima Jinnah Medical University during the Annual Scientific Conference 2024’s preconference session. The event was attended by Punjab Health Minister for Specialized Healthcare and Medical Education, Mr. Khawaja Salman Rafique, who served as the Chief Guest, with Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Khalid Masood Gondal acting as Patron-in-Chief.

According to Fatima Jinnah Medical University – Lahore, Prof. Dr. Khalid Masood Gondal opened the seminar by highlighting the importance of preventative measures in combating thalassaemia, noting the extensive services offered by the Punjab Thalassaemia Institute across the province’s 36 districts. Mr. Khawaja Salman Rafique emphasized the necessity for blood screening for thalassaemia among prospective couples and called for empathy from healthcare professionals.

Prof. Dr. Shabnam Bashir discussed Pakistan’s advancements in thalassaemia awareness and prenatal diagnostics, mentioning the university’s affiliation with a major prevention program. The Punjab Government’s efforts in establishing the Punjab Thalassaemia and Other Genetic Disorder Prevention and Research Institute were also noted, providing free preventative and eradication services.

The seminar featured performances by thalassemic children, and Prof. Gondal awarded honorary shields to distinguished guests and certificates to employees of the Punjab Thalassaemia and Other Genetic Disorder Prevention and Research Institute for their commendable work.
