ISLAMABAD: The International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI) hosted a seminar titled “Research with Purpose: Aligning University Research with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)” to emphasize the importance of integrating academic research with the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
The event, organized by IIUI’s SDGs Working Group, opened with remarks from Dr. Zara Tahir of the Department of Technology and Management. The seminar aimed to foster a dialogue on how university research can address both national and global challenges through the lens of the SDGs.
IIUI President, Professor Dr. Ahmed Shuja Syed, delivered the keynote address, underscoring the necessity of incorporating SDGs into academic research. Dr. Ahmed Shuja acknowledged the efforts of the university’s SDGs Working Group in promoting this alignment.
Dr. Noor Fatima, who leads the Working Group, elaborated on the 17 goals and pointed out various government initiatives aimed at their realization. She highlighted the significance of understanding and implementing these goals within the academic community.
Prof. Dr. Manzoor Khan Afridi, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, emphasized the need for aligning Pakistan’s academic research with global SDG objectives. He stressed the potential impact such alignment could have on both national development and international collaboration.
Dr. Sarah Amir from the Department of Environmental Science spoke on the vital role students play in SDG-related research. She noted that funding and partnerships are available to support initiatives that align with sustainability goals.
In a similar vein, Dr. Engr. Nisar Ali Khan of Civil Engineering discussed how involvement in SDG research could enhance the university’s standing in global rankings. He encouraged faculty members to engage actively with these goals.
Ms. Munazza Khalid from the Department of Politics and International Relations urged all faculties within IIUI to realign their research efforts to better reflect the SDGs. She encouraged students to delve into underrepresented areas that could benefit from focused research.
The seminar also featured interactive activities centered around SDG themes, offering participants the opportunity to engage with sustainability issues practically.
Concluding the seminar, Dr. Nazim Rahim provided insights into the academic and professional benefits of focusing research efforts on SDGs. The event concluded with closing remarks by Dr. Noor Fatima, reinforcing the seminar’s call to action.
