Nairobi: The first ever “Future of Dementia in Africa: Advancing Global Partnerships” conference concluded recently, establishing a significant milestone in enhancing dementia care and research across Africa. Hosted in collaboration by Aga Khan University’s Brain and Mind Institute, the Davos Alzheimer’s Collaborative (DAC), and Nature Conferences, this event brought together over 200 experts from various fields to drive forward the discussion on brain health on the continent.
According to The Aga Khan University, the conference highlighted the crucial need for innovative healthcare solutions and advanced research tailored to Africa’s growing elderly population, which is expected to triple by 2050. The discussions focused on the importance of early prevention and detection strategies, emphasizing the adaptation of research methodologies to reflect Africa’s genetic diversity and healthcare settings.
The event underscored the significant role of African leadership in global brain health advancements, with keynote speakers such as George Vradenburg, Founding Chairman of DAC, praising Africa’s potential to influence global strategies. Professor Zul Merali, Director of the Brain and Mind Institute at Aga Khan University, advocated for a comprehensive approach to dementia, integrating prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment.
Dr. Chi Udeh-Momoh, a neuroscientist at the institute, pointed out the current gap in effective treatments for Africans, which stems from a lack of localized genetic research. She called for more focused studies to develop appropriate interventions for the African demographic.
The conference promoted international collaborations and emphasized the need for increased funding and support for dementia research in Africa. It also celebrated the successes of grassroots healthcare initiatives, which have shown promising results in various African regions. The collective insights from this conference pave the way for impactful, localized strategies in tackling dementia, positioning Africa as a leader in the global effort to enhance brain health.
