From talent discovery to recognition: A journey of UOL’s self-taught calligrapher

Lahore, September 01, 2023 (PPI-OT): Some people are good at practicing medicinal knowledge, some are good at tweaking software, and few are adept at projecting their creativity on canvas. These individuals’ fascination with art enables them to project their surrounding reality with colourful strokes and curves. A student from the University of Lahore (UOL), found her passion for calligraphy and started to exhibit her skills by calligraphically scripting Quranic verses.

Ms Fatima Naseem, currently doing her MBA from UOL, is pursuing her calligraphic talent alongside her studies. Her journey being a calligrapher was not a smooth trail. While stating the discovery of her talent, she said that she started her journey from Rahim Yar Khan ten years ago. Since she was criticised for not being able to perform well in her studies, she found her solace in the arts and that is when she discovered her talent for calligraphy.

Hinting on her motivation behind working on Quranic verses, she said that at the time when she was struggling with her studies, she found herself drawn closer to the Quran. “I struggled a lot in school academically and faced difficulties for not being an extraordinary student. Nonetheless, I never gave up, found inspiration from the Quran and started working on my calligraphy skills,” she iterated.

Ms Naseem completed her Bachelors from her home town and with the hope of exploring more opportunities in the field of art, she came to Lahore. Her shift from Rahim Yar Khan to Lahore proved to be an avid life turning moment for her as she got admission to UOL’s MBA program and began making strides as a calligrapher.

By the time she found her artistic niche, she began to win multiple competitions, conducted various exhibitions, and even started to conduct workshops to share her artistic skills with others. Lately, she won the Business Incubation Competition (BIC) at Khawaja Fareed University of Engineering and Information Technology (KFUEIT). She also won the calligraphy competitions organised during the FAST Daira and NUST EME Olympiad. Ms Naseem has conducted workshops at the Alhamra Arts Council and UOL. She organised solo and group exhibitions at different places such as KFUEIT’s art department, KFUEIT grand fiesta, Rahim Yar Khan Expo, Rawalpindi Arts Council, Alhamra Arts Council, Khana e Farhang, and the general Consulate Iran.

This is just a brief enlisting of her achievements; her future plans are far above all her current accolades. “I want to emerge as one of the best calligraphers of Pakistan and I will try my best to project a positive image of Pakistan to the whole world through my art work. Also, I want to open an art institute for the people who struggle to polish their art skills,” her words while revealing her future plans.

Her message to all her fellow artists is to be consistent in their work and not rush after recognition, every acknowledgement comes at its due time. “Hard work and struggles get paid off in miraculous ways, we just need to play our part in the best possible way,” she advised.
