The Nuclear Book Club at SISS dept. holds intellectual group discussions on current affairs

Lahore, September 01, 2023 (PPI-OT): Fostering critical thinking skills among students is a vital part of the academic journey, and book club discussions can serve as a key source to trigger them. The School of Integrated Social Sciences (SISS) bucked up its students to take the initiative of launching a ‘Nuclear Book Club’.

The Nuclear Book Club stands as a pioneering platform for students to engage in intellectual discussions, explore current affairs, and delve into international relations theories. By encouraging critical thinking, broadening horizons, enhancing communication skills, fostering a sense of community, and nurturing leadership abilities, the club significantly contributes to the educational growth and development of its members.

During the weekly sessions of this club, a plethora of thought-provoking short articles and essays are assigned to the members, and a friendly and open environment is created. Over the past semester, this pioneering club has become an important forum for intellectual growth and debate among students to analyse and evaluate complex issues from various perspectives, leading to intellectual growth and a deeper comprehension of global affairs.

This book club is playing a vital role in enhancing students’ educational experiences. By coming together in an intellectual and inclusive environment, students form connections and establish relationships with like-minded peers who share their passion for international relations. This sense of community fosters collaboration, friendship, and the exchange of ideas beyond the club’s formal sessions, providing students with a support network that enhances their overall university experience. Students learn to present their thoughts coherently, listen actively to others, and respond constructively to differing perspectives. These communication skills are invaluable in academic and professional settings, where the ability to express ideas clearly and engage in productive dialogue is highly prized.

As a student-run initiative, the club offers opportunities for students to take on leadership roles and develop organisational skills. Members of the club have the chance to organise and moderate discussions, coordinate events, invite guest speakers, and manage the club’s overall functioning. Through these responsibilities, students gain valuable experience in leadership, event management, and teamwork, which prepares them for future leadership roles in academic, professional, and social contexts. All in all, the club provides a safe and supportive space where individuals can express their opinions, articulate their ideas, and engage in respectful debates.
