Lahore, July 27, 2023 (PPI-OT): Ophthalmologists from UOL achieved an incredible milestone in Mogadishu of conducting intricate eye surgeries including those of the two blind sisters who miraculously regained their vision within a single day. Dr Muhammad Khizar Bashir (Director, Clinical Affairs and Academic Advisor, Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences (DOVS)) at the University of Lahore (UOL), one of the globally recognised ophthalmologists, took part in the recently concluded Eye Surgery and Training Project in Somalia. The project, organised by the Comprehensive Eye Care Programme (CECP) team from the UOL in collaboration with Al Baseer Foundation, brought hope and restored vision of patients with complicated eye problems.
For this noble cause, Dr Bashir and other UOL’s senior ophthalmologists recently embarked on a transformative journey to Al-Ihsan Specialist Hospital in Mogadishu between June 9 and 15, 2023. The project aimed at addressing the eye-health needs of the local community in Mogadishu, particularly those with complicated eye problems. With the tireless efforts of the medical team, more than 150 patients were fortunate enough to receive successful eye surgeries. These individuals, burdened with complex clinical situations such as cataract, can now envision a brighter future thanks to the skilled hands and compassionate hearts of the doctors involved.
Nevertheless, the true hallmark of this project lies in the restoration of hope and sight for two blind sisters. Through the expertise of Dr Bashir and his team, these sisters underwent successful eye surgeries and, miraculously, were able to see again from the very next day. Overwhelmed with gratitude, their family honored the surgeon and the entire team by presenting them with a special thanks, a testament to the life-changing impact they have made.
The UOL’s project also empowered Somali optometrists beyond the surgical procedures. Through comprehensive training sessions, the specialised health workers were equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to handle complex clinical situations independently. This transfer of expertise ensured that the impact of this project extends far beyond its duration, benefiting the local community for years to come. The successful completion of the Eye Surgery and Training Project in Somalia represents a shining example of the UOL’ dedication to global outreach and healthcare excellence. Upon his return, Dr Bashir expressed gratitude to Mr Awais Raoof (Chairman BoG, UOL) for the moral and financial support rendered in this humanitarian effort.
