Circular Plastic Institute, Asia Poly Vinyl Network, and Engro Polymer Chemical Limited Join Hands for a Study on Vinyl Products

Karachi, May 25, 2023 (PPI-OT): Circular Plastic Institute (CPI) at KSBL, in collaboration with Asia Poly Vinyl Network (APVN), and Engro Polymer and Chemical Limited (EPCL), has launched a ground-breaking initiative to conduct a comprehensive Lifecycle Assessment (LCA) study on four key vinyl products manufactured from PVC material. This landmark project aims to provide valuable insights and recommendations regarding the performance and socio-environmental impacts of these products throughout their lifecycles. The signing ceremony for this partnership recently took place at Engro Polymers office.

The LCA study will examine various stages of the product lifecycle, including raw material extraction, manufacturing processes, distribution, usage, and end-of-life management. By assessing the environmental and social aspects associated with these vinyl products, the study aims to provide industry stakeholders, government bodies, and regulatory authorities with valuable insights and recommendations. The outcomes of the study will serve as a resource to make informed decisions and implement measures that mitigate negative environmental impacts. Additionally, the findings and recommendations will provide government agencies and regulatory bodies with insights into potential policy and regulatory interventions required to foster sustainability in the plastic sector.

“We are thrilled to embark on this partnership, which signifies CPI’s dedication to fostering applied research and building a robust ecosystem based on scientific methodologies and tools, data-driven decision-making, and active engagement,” expressed Shiza Aslam, Research Fellow at Circular Plastic Institute. She further emphasized that through this collaboration, the aim is to accelerate Pakistan’s transition to a circular future by exemplifying the transformative potential of the plastic industry.

Dr. Ahmad Junaid, Rector and Dean at KSBL, shared his vision for the project. “Sustainability serves as the guiding principle in this endeavour. By integrating innovative technologies, business models, and policy frameworks, the aim is to transform the plastics industry into one that promotes reuse, recycling, and responsible resource management.”

“By working hand in hand with industry stakeholders, we are actively shaping the business leaders of tomorrow, equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge to drive sustainable change,” said Aijaz Haq, Head of Growth and External Linkages at KSBL. He also highlighted the partnership’s commitment to societal and environmental impact, stating, “This collaboration stands as a testament to our dedication to creating a positive impact on society and the environment.”

CPI, APVN, and EPCL are united in their dedication to promoting a circular economy and sustainable business models. The LCA study is a testament to their joint efforts to drive positive change and advance the understanding of vinyl products’ lifecycle impacts. By collaborating on this pioneering initiative, the partners aim to create a more sustainable and environmentally conscious plastic industry in Pakistan.

Artworks displayed by SU students in thesis show 2023 attract visitors

Jamshoro, May 25, 2023 (PPI-OT): An exhibition of artworks by the final year students of the Institute of Art and Design (IAD), University of Sindh opened at institute’s Benazir gallery, attracting a large number of visitors, including art lovers, students and other guests here on Tuesday. The artists in the thesis show 2023 have used various media such as miniature, sculpture, painting, photography and printmaking and brought together a powerful visual art display, showcasing works of a batch of talented artists, architects, textile and graphic designers.

Inaugurated by the Dean Faculty of Arts Professor Dr Muhammad Khan Sangi, the opening ceremony was attended by Dr Lachhman Das Dhomeja, Shakeel Abro, Dr Mahmood Mughal, Dr Zulfiqar Leghari, Dr Muhammad Younis Leghari, Dr Saju Mal, Dr Raza Shah, Shahid Hussain Larik, Naimatullah Khilji, Sabeen Naeem, Samreen Khilji, Nayab Mirani, Naeema Soomro, Azka, Nadir Ali Jamali, Najeebullah Rashdi, Ghulam Qadir Khaskheli, Rabela Abro, Hasamuddin Mirani and many other heads of departments, faculty members and students.

Graduating students of the three disciplines- Communication Design, Fine Art and Textile Design use the thesis exhibit to showcase the work which they have done during the last year and produce art from their talent. They did not disappoint their teachers and parents while coming up with unique themes from real life. The students showed their creative works in a befitting manner. Some of the students came up with innovative ideas. The students displayed their creativity by employing innovative mediums to highlight different modes of humans and other creators while highlighting social issues and problems being faced by women and other segments of society.

The artists explored various themes, highlighting social, political and geographical issues, and employed a number of techniques including miniature painting, printmaking and sculpture to express their own stories and personal journeys through contemporary art. Speaking on the occasion, Dean Faculty of Arts Professor Dr Muhammad Khan Sangi appreciated the students for coming up with new and innovative ideas and producing fine art in their thesis. He also cherished teachers for the guidance and art they transferred to their students.

He said that the work of the students was simple but attractive and they conveyed their message through their thesis easily without any hurdle. He said the students would produce better work while focusing on theory and its practice. He termed the degree show exceptional as it consisted of exclusive works of art. “As always, the Institute of Art and Design has produced an overwhelming quality of work. Having viewed the work that is produced by the students, the thesis work is very interesting,” said Dr Sangi. He said the work of the IAD students showed that the country had a talented young generation who knew how to highlight issues of humanity.

“Each painting provides an extensive narrative portraying the upheaval impacting the young artists, further urging them to create an array of illustrations with regard to their emotional turmoil. The miniature technique applied explores themes of paradox as the’ smaller’ accounts for vaster issues that seem to be grasping society,” he stated. Addressing the ceremony, the Director Institute of Art and Design Professor Saeed Ahmed Mangi said the works on display were a symbol of hope and representative of rich creativity, adding that he was happy to exhibit students’ works.

“As BS in Communication Design, Fine Art and Textile Design encourages an inquiry into theory and practice, it enables students to find a nexus between both approaches during a period of four years,” he added.

The exhibition will continue till May 26, 2023.

Non-profits Al-Khidmat Foundation and Green Crescent Trust to work together for enrollment of out-of-school children in Sindh and Balochistan

Lahore, May 25, 2023 (PPI-OT): Two leading non-profits, the Al-Khidmat Foundation Pakistan and Green Crescent Trust (GCT), have agreed to work together to jointly tackle the challenge of out-of-school children and illiteracy in backward areas of Sindh and Balochistan. The agreement to this effect was reached as the chiefs of the two non-profits attended the inauguration of a combined charitable school in the underprivileged town of Winder in Balochistan. The school has been handed over to GCT by Al-Khidmat Foundation Women Wing (AKFWW). This is the second such joint activity by the two charities.

Al-Khidmat Foundation Pakistan President, Dr Hafeez ur Rehman, who was the chief guest on the occasion, said that building quality schooling facilities in Balochistan would go a long way in tackling the issues of backwardness and mass poverty in the largest province of the country. He said that enrollment of out-of-school children in Sindh and Balochistan had become such a gigantic task that the concerned charities working in the education sector had no option but to combine their resources and efforts for jointly tackling this pressing problem.

He said the concerned non-governmental organizations should collaborate with each other for the schooling of the children from deprived families instead of any competition for such a noble cause. He gave the example of the famous Malaysian ruler, Mahathir Mohammad, who by massively spending (40% of GDP) to provide quality schooling and health facilities for fellow countrymen had enabled Malaysia to become an Asian tiger in the shortest possible time. He urged the GCT to join hands with Al-Khidmat in its drive to provide health facilities for underprivileged families, for running the orphan welfare program, and for rebuilding the lives devastated by the floods of last year.

GCT CEO, Zahid Saeed, while welcoming the idea of working together with Al-Khidmat, told the audience that his non-profit had launched similar partnerships with other concerned charities for the education of the children belonging to deprived families like as Shahid Afridi Foundation, Jamiat Taleem ul Quran, Irshad Foundation, Sindh Education Foundation and others. He said that this was the first time the GCT had stepped outside Sindh to expand its charitable education drive continuing for the past 29 years. He said that earlier the GCT had established 162 charitable schools in Sindh having an enrollment of over 30,500 children from deprived families. The GCT chief informed the audience that most of these schools had been built in such backward areas of Sindh where there was no prior proper educational facility.

He said the GCT had been massively motivated earlier this year to extend its charitable work to Balochistan after holding three fundraisers in Lahore for collecting donations for its charitable schooling program. “The top businessmen and industrialists of Punjab who attended these fundraisers asked us to launch our schooling program in Balochistan as early as possible as they promised to provide massive financial support to this noble drive,” he said. He said that after witnessing the firm resolve of Punjab’s business community to support the charitable work in Balochistan the GCT was encouraged to start working in the largest province of the country.

“With this school in Winder becoming functional there will be Inshallah no looking back in building more such academic facilities in Balochistan,” he said. He held out the assurance to the audience to upgrade the newly built school to Class 10th in the coming years provided that the local community extends support for the enrollment of their children. He said the GCT had the resolve that a sizable number of the graduates of its schools acquired the academic qualification to become administrators and educators in GCT schools and out of GCT schools.

AKFWW Chairperson, Naveeda Anees, hoped that a charitable school in Winder would enable area people to defeat the vicious cycle of poverty by imparting quality school education to their future generations. She said the quality academic facilities in Balochistan would enable its citizens to acquire the skills they need to utilize the massive mineral resources of the province for transforming the lives of millions of underprivileged people. She said the school had been named after noble social activist, Nasra Ilyas while recognising her pioneering charitable work to build the foundations of the AKFWW in the country.

President of the Al-Khidmat Balochistan chapter, Jameel Ahmed Kurd, said the concerned charities had to work together for spreading education in the backward areas as still 2.7 million children were out of school in Balochistan. He said that around 20,000 existing schools including 13,000 government-run educational facilities in Balochistan had so far miserably failed to overcome this issue. GCT Trustee, Saad Zia, COO, Habib Navaid, AKFWW core team members, Nasra Ilyas, Aisha Saad, Fareeda Parveen, Dr. Hussain Bano and other dignitaries also attended the event.
