Dr Arif works on the geochemical evaluation of coal from the Salt Range in Pakistan

Lahore, April 07, 2023 (PPI-OT): Due to rise in global oil prices and domestic political and economic crisis in Pakistan, the state is becoming energy insecure. Pakistan has become heavily dependent on energy imports. It desperately needs to find alternatives to overcome its energy insecurity and meet its domestic energy demand. In this regard, Dr Arif Nazir (Associate Professor/HoD, Department of Chemistry) and fellow researchers worked on the geochemical evaluation of hydrocarbon-generating potential and thermal stress experienced by the Patala Formation, Salt Range, and Upper Indus Basin, Pakistan.

This study focused on the investigation of hydrocarbon potential, thermal maturity, and ranking of the coal from the Salt Range in Pakistan. Four different mines located in different areas of the Salt Range were selected for sample acquisition. The samples were further processed and analysed in the laboratory using proximate analysis, ultimate analysis, and Rock-Eval pyrolysis. The proximate analysis conducted by Dr. Nazir and his team illustrated that the coal of the Salt Range is of low rank because of its low moisture content and high volatile material. The ultimate analysis indicated that the coal is immature and has lower carbon contents.

The coals have total organic carbon contents in the range of 36.45 to 48.68 wt. % and hydrogen index values between 277 and 445 mg HC/TOC, indicating that the organic matter type is dominated by type II. Moreover, Rock-Eval pyrolysis parameters further supported it as an excellent source rock having type II kerogen and an oil-prone nature with some gas-prone characteristics. The data that Dr. Nazir and his team collected actually suggested that the coal samples are in a low conversion state and are thermally immature.

Dr Nazir is considered one of the top researchers in the field of chemistry at the University of Lahore (UOL) and has worked on 149 research studies (cumulative impact factor of 520) conducted with foreign and local collaborators. He has been a consistent recipient of “UOL’s Research Productivity Award” for the last six years (2017-2022).

UOL supports turning my dreams into reality, says Rashad Fayez

Lahore, April 07, 2023 (PPI-OT): The University of Lahore (UOL) believes that cultural diversity is a driving force of development, not only with respect to economic growth but also as a means of leading a more fulfilling intellectual, emotional, moral, and spiritual life. It prioritises providing opportunities to students from different parts of the world to pursue their academic dreams at UOL. One of its international students, Rashad Fayez Ayaydah from Palestine, shared his experience of studying at UOL.

Mr. Ayaydah got admission to UOL on the basis of a scholarship. While sharing his story, he said, “At first, it was difficult for me to adjust to the language barrier in place. I started making friends with the local students, and it helped eradicate the problem as I learned the local language and became fluent. I have spent a reasonable amount of time in UOL, and looking back at the time when I joined, I feel that the university has provided me with an opportunity to explore my capabilities.”

“Apart from learning Urdu, I groomed myself to a level where the university allowed me to work in the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) as a student intern.” After completing my graduation in pharmacy, I was able to apply the knowledge gained in my practical life very effectively. I did an internship with a couple of pharmacies to gain more experience, which gave me good vibes that I will be able to do good for my community in the upcoming time. And thus, I also started my MPhil in pharmaceutics. I dreamt to have this degree, and once I graduate, I will be beaming with pride,” he explained.

“I met several amazing people here and found great mentors, who guided me so well in the beginning when I used to be so confused about everything since it was my first time being out of my country and in Pakistan. But the support from the university management and the OSA for me and all other international students was astonishing; it helped me chalk out my own path. The University always provides extraordinary support to promote international student culture on campus. This kept me motivated to achieve my dreams. Finally, I feel that it is inspirational that I worked through my struggles and successfully represented myself, my country, and my culture at the University of Lahore,” he said.
